The Union Company's steamer Waipori, ■which arrived at Auckland from Newcastle ■ on Friday .after a passage of eight days, had a trying experience. Shortly after leaving ■Newcastle the Waipori encountered a strong gale and high seas, and she was hove-to for 24 hours. ' Heavy seas broke on board the vessel, and the officers' cabins were deluged with water, so -that baling out had to ■bo resorted to. Comparatively little damage was sustained, the breaking' in of a door being the most serious consequence of the storm. A somewhat similar experience befell the collier Kaiapoi, which arrived in Lyttelton on Saturday morning from Newcastle. The necks were continually awash, and after clearing the Nobbys the Bhip had to heave-to until the gale moderated on Monday last. A remarkable feature of the passage was the action of the barometer, which was falling when the vessel left Newcastle, and which ranged from 29.40 to 29.30 all the way across -until the vessel passed Cape Campbell, when it rose to 29.60 with a fresh southerly wind. NEW STEAMERS IOR AUSTRALIAN TRADE. News has been received to the effect that the Federal Steam Navigation Company is building three new steamers for the Australian trade. Each vessel will be of about 14,000 tons, and will have the distinction of being the largest liners employed in the Australian trade, eclipsing the Orient and P. and 0 , and also the N.D.L. liners in size. The Grosser Kurfurst, of 13,243 tons, now holds tiie record for tonnage in Australian waters The new Federal liners will be up to date in every respect, having twin screws, and five masts. The vessels are to carry some 300 first-class passengers and probably 200 thirdclass. The new liners will have all the most modern appliances for the rapid handling of cargo, and will be fitted with all due regard to the working of the Manchester Canal. MANAMA, FROM SYDNEY. The Marama. arrived in the stream from Sydney direct at 7 o'clock this morning, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf about on hour later. The vessel left' Sjdney at 3 p.m. on Saturday last, and experienced fine weather and smooth seas until arrival at Wellington On Tuesday evening a very successful concert ■was given by the Stephenson Company in aid of the Shipwreck Relief Society.
