A RIOT.
UNPOPULAR POLICEMAN. SEQUEL TO AN ASSAULT. MAN SENT TO GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS. By Telegraph,— Press Association. -Copyright. (Received April 11, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 10th April. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was recently passed on a man named Hodgson, on a charge of as--saulting Henthorn, an unpopular member of the police force, at Silsden, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, twelve miles north-west of Bradford, Yorkshire. This led to a riot. The police were reinforced, and used 1 their batons, dispersing the mob. Henthorn has now been transferred •:to another position. A petition has been presented to Mr. Winston Churchill (Home Secretary), asking for an enquiry into the conduct sof5 of the police; also demanding Hodg,son's release.
