NEW BATTLESHIPS.

The Brazilian battleship Rio da Janeiro, of 32,000 tons displacement, the largest battleship in the world, now under construction at the Elswick yards, will be anned 1 with twelve 14-inch guns, and will have improved armour protection. [It was practically decided last year that the Eio de Janeiro would carry 14inch guns. The vessel is the third Braziban Dreadnought, the others being the Minas Geraes and the Sao Paulo. The 14-inch gun is apparently to "become the fashion. '"' in Germany it is understood an experimental piece of that, calibre has been under trial at the* Krupp works, and it is known that the United Statee intends to mount on future Dreadnoughts the 14-incher.]
