PETONE BOROUGH'S FINANCES.

MAYORAL STATEMENT. Brief reference to the finances of the Petone Borough Council was made by tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) at last night's meeting of that body. On the whole, he stated, the council had kept fairly well within the estimates for tho year. Ho instanced the case of one or two accounts. The sanitary service for the year just ended had cost £1766 as against an estimated expenditure oi £1817. In connection with the general work of the borough, the council had slightly exceeded its estimate; tho expenditure was £2449, and the estimated cost £2275. lie could not promise that there would be any surplus in the general account this year. He had dealt with two of the largest items, however, and they shortly _ indicated the general tenor of the expenditure. When councillors had had an opportunity of perusing the balancesheet, ho would deal fully with the finances. He would also shortly take an opportunity of indicating what he considered should be the policy of the council for the future.
