A REPORTED FORTUNE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 3rd. March. A romance of life occurred this week when a Southend- painter named Henry Howard, of Kingston House, Pleasantroad, received notice that by tho death of an uncle in New Zealand he had inherited a fortune of £16,000. It is stated that the uncle carried on business as a general store-dealer at Wade, Auckland, and also owned a farm, with a considerable number of cattle. As a young man, Howard worked in New Zealand with his uncle, but thirteen years ago they had a difference of opinion and parted. The nephew returned to England and renounced all expectation of hearing again from his uncle. Howard has followed the occupation, of a painter and paperhanger, and as work has been none too good this winter, the news of -his' unexpected fortune has Come at an opportune moment. Howard expects to leave for New Zealand in a few weeks' time. ' IS IT A MISTAKE? [BI TKLKGKAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Enquiries made at Wade> r^arding the correspondent's message as to Mr. Howard's legacy failed to elicit any information as to the life and death of the legatee's wealthy uncle, who seemed quite unknown to residents of the district. -The one storekeeper of the place informed a Star reporter that he had been a resident for forty years, and was still "going strong." He said that if any other storekeeper had died worth £16,000 he would have known it. The general impressidn was that the whole thing must be a "mistake.
