SIR ALFRED LYALL. By Telegraph.— -Prei« Association.— Copyright. (Received April 11, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 10th April. Sir Alfred Lyall died suddenly whileLord Tennyson's guest at the Isle of Wight. [Sir Alfred Comyn Lyall, X.C.8.. G.C.1. E., P.C., was born in 1835, and educated at Eton. He entered the Bengal Civil Service, and in 1882 was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the North-west Provinces, a position he occupied for five years. From 1888 to 1902 he was a Member of the CounciK of the Secretary of State for India. Later he was appointed*, Ford's lecturer in 'English History at Oxford University. His publications are : — "Verses Written ,in India," "British Dominion in India," "Asiatic Studies/ "Life of Warren Hastings," "Tennyson" (Men of Letters series), and "Life of the Marquis of Dufferin."]
