Returns of .vital statistics showing the town to 'have one of the lowest death rates of aH the boroughs In the Dominion — if not actually the lowest — were before the Petone Council last night. This fact led a councillor to enquire whether the deaths of Petone residents who died in the Wellington Hospital were registered in the city or credited to Petone. According to the Mayor such cases w-ere put down to Wellington's account. "Small wonder," commented a councillor, "that Petone has tho lowest d-eath rate then." What matter, added another civic father, which set of retains were swelled? It made no difference ho-w, where, or when a resident died so long as he did actually die. On the other hand a member pointed out that while he appreciated the fact that a low death-Tate was a good advertisement for the boTough, still he did not wish to £©c Pekme get credit by unfair means. As doubt was ©till expressed on the point as to whether deaths of Petone patients were included in Wellington's returns, the clerk was instructed to write to the Registrar for enlightenment.
