RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. THIS DAY .

(Before the Hon J. C. Crawford, R.M.) His Worship took his seat on the bench at ten o'clock this morning, and disposed of the following cases :—: — John Phillips, charged with being drunk, assaulting a constable, and tearing his clothes, was fined 10s for drunkenness, 10s for the Assault, aud £2 17s for the damage dene to the constable's clothing. John Clements, for dunkenness, was fined ss. William Henderson, charged with an assault on the police, was remanded until tomorrow. Henry Thorncliff, was charged by Captain Bishop, of the Wild Duck, with refusing to do duty. Remanded till to-morrow. James Mmoney, for assaulting Sergeant Crowder, was fined 20s. Patrick Lennon, charged with assaulting Inspector Atchison, remanded till to- morrow. Patrick Conolly was placed at the bar, charged with being a deserter from H.M.'b 14th Regiment of Foot. The apprehending constable, acting on information received by him, arrested Uonolly, who denied the charge, and stated that he belonged to the Military Settlers in Hawke's Bay, but was discharged on the Bth of December instant, when he left, and travelled orerland to Wellington with a mate, and called a witness to prove his statement. George Davidson, cook at Martei's Restaurant, was produced. He knew the prisoner who served with him in the Military Settlers at Hawke's Bay ; they were both discharged from the service on the Bth or 9th instant. His Worship said there was no evidence that the man belonged to the 14th Regiment, and dismissed the case.
