TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.

Sir— l see by the Wellington Independent of this morning that the courseypursued by me in a c»»e recently heard in the Resident Magistrate's Court, has been rather severely criticised. On i hat occasion I prosecuted a man named Mnith forobtaining money under false pretences, and the Independent observes — " Notwithstanding this (alludinar to Judge Johnston's address to the grand jury at the July sittings), some business men in this city yet persist in accepting any pieces of paper purporting to be good and valid cheques, from any one who offers them. People who will be so credulous must be sold, at was Mr. Morgan Francis O'Meara, when he (a» will be seen by our polios report) gave £3 10s to the man Smith, receiving as an equivalent a • badly written cheque,' drawn by a man the < worse for liquor' on a bank where he had no funds." Now, Sir, the man Smith was no stranger to me ; he was well-known in Wellington, having belonged to the police force. With rospeut to the cheque being badly written, I may safely say the writer of the abovn might with advantage take lessons in culigraphy from the writer of the cheque

above alluded to To the assertion that the man was in liquor at the time, I give a moat emphatic contradiction. Why I, as a tradesman, should be burlesqued for doing my duty, by stopping the career of a dishonest man, I know not, unless the writer was actuated by strong personal feelings. I am, Sir, M. F. O'Mbaba. Eagle Tavern, Dec. 16.
