The Evening Post. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1865.

The s.s. Airedale, Captain Meikleham, from the North, arrived at one o'clock today. We have received our Auckland flies, bue there is no news worth extracting. The «.s. Rangatira Captain Seymsur, from Otago and Canterbury, came into jttrt this forenoon. The ihip James Lister, Captain Linklater, arrived in port this morning from London, after a passage of 133 days, daring which ¦he experienced light winds and variable weather. The James Lister brings about 27 passengers, amongst whom we notice tbe name of the Rev Mr. M'Gowan, a gentleman who has come out for the purpose of taking charge of the Presbyterian Church at the. Butt. She brings a large general cargo, including some wharf material, and is consigned to Messrs. Levin and Co. There were no births or deaths on board during the passage. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, GeorgeGough was charged with drunkenness, and fined 20b or seven days' imprisonment. John O. G. Smith, charged with obtaining money under false pretences, was remanded till to-morrow ; and Mary Weston, for being drunk and disorderly, committed to gaol for six weeks, with hard labour. M. F. O'Meara r. T. F. Stephens, debt £11 15s, summons not served

M. S. Grace, Esq., M.D., has been appointed Acting Provincial Surgeon for the Province of Wellington. Captain Soott and Mr. Launcelot Holmes have been appointed pilots for this port. T. A. Bowden, Esq., 8.A., has been appointed Inspector of Schools for this Province. From a letter received in Sydney, from Col. Ward, it would appear there is a probability of another All-England Eleven visiting Australia. The colonel says the entire sum required to be tubscribed ought not to exceed £6tOO. The new Victoria Hotel is now complete, and will be found one of the most comfortable in Wellington. Mr. Somerville has spared no expense in rendering this establishment second to none ; the sitting and bedrooms are large and lofty, and in every way calculated to ensure the comfort of his patrons. Extensive stabling and paddocks are conuected with the hotel. A sporting match of great interest has just b^rrj settled at Ballarat. Mr. Harper's horse Bttrwon is backed to beat Mr. Dowling's horse Panic, in a three-mile race, on the Ballarat racecourse, on the 16th March next, each horse 'to carry 9at, for 1000 guineas ; and 100 guineas have been deposited with Mr. Craig ; the balance (900) is to be paid on the 12th of March, the party failing to do so to forfeit the hundred now staked. "In the County Court on Wednesday," says the Daylesford Mercury, "a learned coun el, who had occupied the ear of the Court for a most wearisome time, proposed to 'commence pointing out 'the humbug of this kind of thing'— meaning, not his ewn speech, but the faults of the other side. His Honor, who seemed to be smarting under severe restraint of feeling, exclaimed, ' Oh, Mr. , everbody is a humbug occasionally, for the matter of that.' The learned counsel, rather taken aback, admitted ' His Honor must be considered a good judge, and branched off into another part of the case." The Melbourne Age has news of the salmon fr m Tasmania, and it is that they are sufficiently numerous to be gobbled up, four or five at a meal, by the " *hag«." However, it is satisfactory to know that the fish are food fit even for cormorants ; &nd from Dr> Officer's report it would appear that the experiment promises to be successful. The par have reached the " smoult " stage, And will soon take their sea trip. The problem yet to be solved is whether they will escape their enemies, and find their way back to the place of their nativity, to increase and multiply, as in duty boun d.
