THE SHENANDOAH.

What do the Melbourne Olubbists think of their honorary member, their very respectable pirate friend, Captain Waddell, of the Shenandoah? Who does not remember how grossly Mr. Francis and the Attorney-General were abused for doing their duty ; and how the Argus informed the buccaneer that he might do as he pleased regardless of the Government, which did not represent the feelings of tue people of Victoria ? And the fellow availed himself of the licence by offering- a personal insult to the Governor because he

did not happen to arrive at the Government offices at the time Captain Waddell fixed for him. The Times suggests that English men-of-war should be sent in pursuit of the Shenandoah to capture her, and treat her as a pirate wherever She might be , found. Will the snobs of the club extend their patronage now? Will they use their influence to save their quondam friend from the yard arm f There is in this community a class of ignorant, self-suf-ficient persons who are ever ready to deliver themselves authoritatively on any question ; who always know much better than those who have access to information, and who swell their self-importance by attaching themselves to whatever is inimical to liberty or to human progress. How enthusiastic these poor creatures were over the Shenandoah. They rejoiced in her ruthless and cowardly destruction of property, and they were wroth because the Government prudently refused to become partizans. It is to be hoped that the doings of the object of their admiration will teach them discretion for the future. —Melbourne Leader.
