CALEDONIAN GAMES.
A public meeting was held at the Mechanics' Institute yesterday evening, to form a Committee of Management for the sports in celebration of New Years' Day. The meeting was thinly attended, not from any want of enthusiasm, but to be attributed solely to the severity of the weather — an incessant downpour of rain falling throughtho evening. Mr. A. A. Barnett on being moved to the chair, observed that the object in view was praiseworthy, and he hoped to see it carried out satisfactorily. Caledonian games were entirely successful in Viotoria and Otago ; and he was aware many of the principal inhabitants of Wellington were favourable to the move in this direction, as was evidenced by the imposing array of names on the list before him, showing contributions to the amount of about £100 I Mr. Chavannes was glad to see that the celebration of New Year's Day, by initiating sports and amusements of a harmless character, was approved of by his fellowcitizens •, and in order to guard against anything like failure in conducting this matter to a successful issue, he would propose that a committee be nominated by that meeting, in whose hands would be placed the entire management of all matters connected with the celebration of New Year's Day by public amusements, the comtnitte to consist of the following gentlemen :— Messrs. Hunter Messrs. Osgood Crawford Vennell E. Pearce H. Anderson W. B. Rhodes Campbell J. Martin Fawns Sidey Hoss J. Dransfleld W. Miller % A. P. Stu-trt Stafford A. A. Barnett ' Lockey M'lntosh Borthwick Downes Chavannes With power to add to their number. VVfr. Borthwick having seconded the resolution, it was carried unanimously. Mr. painpbell proposed that Mr. J. Curtis should act as honorary secretary, which was seconded by Mr. Boss, and carried. The meeting expressed a wish that his Excellency Sir George Grey and his Honor Mr. Justice Johnston would permit themsplve* to be enrolled as patrons ; also, that liis Honor the Superintendent would accept the office of President, and the Hon. John Johnson that of Vice-President. The Hon. Secretary was instructed to communicate with the above-named gentlemen on this subject ; and also to ascertain from the committee nominated if they would act Messrs. Campbell and M'lntosh were complimented for their exertions in bringing matters to their present very promising stateAfter a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting separated, A man was charged at Manchester with biting off a woman's under lip, and upon being sentenced to three months' imprisonment witli hard labour, the savage exclaimed, " When I come back I'll eat her !"
