A NEGRO FESTIVAL.—
An immense crowd of " American citizens of African descent," living in the neighbourhood of New York, assembled, on the first of August to commemorate the anniversary of the abolition of slavery throughout the British dominions one-and-thirty years ago. Of course no negroe gathering- could take place without speeches and hymns. The fierce-minded " Herald" only reports the former, but the New York Times gives us a sample of the latter as well. Two or three stanzas will suffice :— We'i nearer to .the Lard Den the white fokes, and dey knows it, See de glory-gate unbarred, Walk in, (laikeas, past de guard, Bet yer a dollar he wont close it. Walk in, darkeaa, troo de gate, Hark der kullered angels holler ! Go 'way white fokjs, you're too late, We's de wiunin kuller. Wait Till de trumwet blows to fuller. Hallelonjah ! tanks to praise, Long enuff we've home our crosses, Now we's de sooperior race, ft And wid Gorramighty's grace ™ We's goin to Hebben nfore de bosses.
