The s.s. Ahuriri, Captain Flowerday, from Tarannki and Wanganui, arrived last night. Left yesterday morning at seven a.m., with very fine weather ; at nine a.m. it commenced to blow from the N.W., which lasted until noon, when the wind suddenly ahif.ed to the 8.X., atid blew a gale for a short time ; on getting near the Straits freshed flgnin, likewise with a heavy sea rounding Cape Terawiti, and arrived as above. The paddle Bfeanipr I'iince Alfred arrived in Watigauni the morning previous to the Ahuriri leaving. The brig Dtover, Captain Smith, from Melbourne, via Lyitelton, arrived in port yefii oky. Left Lydeltun on the 28th, and hud vety barl weather crossing the Straits. The Sfonn Bird, with the Nat:ve Contingent on board, arrived at Wanganui on Tuesday afternoon. The Times says — " The natives at Putiki were on the look ont for their friends, and as soon as the steamer came opposite Putiki, they saluted them with T.i Hey after volley, which was returned by the Contingent on bonrd. The picture presented tne ajipearunee, on a small scale, of
the passage of the river being forced, and the town about to be taken by storm. On the Putiki side, natives on horse and foot were hastening towards the Ferry to welcome their friends, whilst the contingent on board danced the war donee, halting at short intervals to give hearty cheers in truly British style. His Honor the Superintendent, W. Buller, Esq., U.M., and Major yon Tempsky went on board to welcome our native allies. We understand that the s.s. St. Kilda will be hunched from the N.Z.S.N. Company's Slip to-morrow, and will proceed to the East Coast to relieve the steamer Start, which vessel, we learn, has been disposed of by the Government to a gentleman at Nelson for the sum of £4,000. The Wanganui Times is responsible for the following on dit :— " It is probable that Mr. l^taffm-J, being opposed in Wellington by the In lependent and the Advertiser, will resuscitate the Spectator, either buying the plant from Mr. stokes, or perhaps leasing the esfcabhsbmeiit during the continuance in office. The name of the proposed editor ha* been mentioned to us, but we await further infor- ' maiinu lief ore saying more upon the subject." | m This evening the Young Men's Christian Association will hole 1 their monthly devotional meeting, when the subject for consideration will be " Spiritual Growth." The firing for the Colonial prizes will take place at or near Wellington, on a day to be named by the Government, (sometime in the [ month of January), and the passatrps of com- | petitors will be paid to nnd from Wellington, : together with an allowance of ten shillings a day to each non-resident during his detention here. The Taranaki News, of the 23rd says : — " Yesterday evening, about five o'clock, a dray laden with spirits was seized on the Carrington road, coming into town The purposes tif justice would not be served by any further particulars at present, suffice it to say two persons are already in custody, and the load of spirits, which was cunningly covered with wood, safely deposited iv H.M bonded stores." In opening the Marlborough Provincial Council the other day, His Honor the Superintendent thus alluded to the financial position of that province :—" lt is wltli sincere regret that I find myself unable to congratulate you on the financial nffnirs of the province. Although the revenue of the , last financial year was not quite sufficient to cover the large sum voted by you in the ' Appropriation Act, still I find that the sum of £1 1,945 19s 4d has been spent.partly in exot>9S of votec, and partly without any appropriation. A Bill to idemnify the late Superintendent for tlie expenditure of this amount will he laid before you. This large outlay of preceding Governments has caused an overdraft on i lie provincial account at the Bank of New Zen land of £6,499 17s 6d, which debt inns, bp provided lor before May, I860."
