WANGANUI-PROSPECTS OF GOLD.

Nr^)ur readers will be glad to learn that gold is likely to be found up the Wanganui river. We understand that John Nixon, Esq., who was accompanied by Air. Alexander Murray and an old California!! digger, has returned to town from a prospecting tour, lie reports that at Atene, about forty miles up, liia associates commenced digging in a ravine, which had at one time formed part of the bed of tne river, and ¦when twelve feet down they came upon a mas* of granite boulders, impregnated with quartz, and giving every indicati >n of the near presencs of a deposit of gold. The natives indicated signs of their unwillingness to pernrt further progress, and the prospecting party accordingly desisted. Mr. Nixon, however, before leaving the place, went some miles farther and had a conversation with a leading chief, who expressed himself as friendly to nnother search, and requested Mr. Nixon to give him information of any s'eps which were likely to be proposed in futur.-, so that he might prevent opposition »o their bein^ brought to a decisive conclusion. Thus the matter rests at present. The prevalent opinion seems to be that there is no doubt of the existence of gold in the locality, but whether in a payable quantity or not is a question which time and experiment alone cm answer. — Chronicle.
