THE CARELESS WORD.
'Twas but a word, a careless word ; Ai thistle-down it seemed as lightIt paused a moment on the air, Then onward wing'd it's rapid flight. Another Up caught up the word, And breathed it with a haughty sneer : It gather'd weiget as on it sped, That careless word, in its career. Then rumour caught the flying word, And busy gossip gave it wtjhjht, Umil that little word became A vehicle of angry hate. And then that word was wing'd with fire, Its mission was a thing of pain ; And toon it fell like lava drops Upon a wildly tortured brain. And then another page of life W ith burning, scalding tears was blurred: A load of care was heavier made,— Its added weight, that careless word. That careless word, O 1 how it scorch'd A fainting, bleeding, quivering heart I 'Twas like a hungry fire that search'd Through every tender, vital part. How wildly throbb'd that aching heart 1 Deep agony its fountain stirr'd : It calni'd 5 but bitter ashes mark'd The pathway ot that careless word.
