The P.N.Z.and A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Airedale, Captain Meikleham, arrived in port this morning at nine o'clock. She left the Manukau at 2 p.m. on the Bth, arriving at Taranaki at fl a.m. on the 9th ; left there same day, and arrived at Nelson at 5 a.m. on the 10th ; Jeft thereat 4 a.m. on the 12th, arriving at Picton at noon same day ; left Picton this morning at 4 o'clock, and arrived here as above. The late Mr. Kendall, whose sudden death we recorded last week, was interred yesterday. Deceased was followed to the grave by a great ooncourse of persons. Being a member of the Order of Oddfellows, the brethren of the various lodges were present on the solemn occasion. The tender of Mr. Burgoyne for the erection of the New Custom House and Post Office, Auckland, lias been accepted, being £23,800 in Hobartown stone, £21,800 in Oamaru, or £21,661 in Bath stone. A dinner was given in Picton, on the 9th instant, to the late Superintendent of the Province of Marlborough. The Press says -. The dinner to the Honorable Arthur Penrose Seymour, which took place lait night, went
off with the greatest enthusiasm. Such an n^t-mltlage is the beat test that could be triven of the esteem in which that gentleman ]» held hy the people of Picton. To him they ow'j a Hebt of frratitude they can never n-prty but which they cheerfully acknowledge, and will always remember. Errors and shortcomings he may have committed in his official capacity, but no one ever doubted his earnest* ness of purpose or anxious desire to conduct the affairs of the Province in a fair, upright, and gentlemanly manner. The Supreme Court will sit in Nelson on ThnrodHy next, the 16th instant, his Honor Mr. Justice Johnston lmving arrived. The calendar, we believe, will be a light one. At the Resident. Magistrate's Cnurt to-day Martin Paterson, Henry Harris, and Ldward McElwain were fined 20s each for being drunk and disorderly. Edward Flanagan, for as«aul'ing a constable in the execution of his duty, was fined 40s for the assault, and 208 for damage ; in default, 21 days' hard labour. A couple of debt cases were disposed of :— Bentwitch v. Nashelski } debt, £98 18s 6d - judgment for amount and costs Susan Smith v. R. Kiddie ; debt, £16 Os lOd iudgment for £8 0s 3d and costs. \ Professor Jacobs, the distinguished wizard of wide-world celebrity, arrived to-day, per Airedale, from Nelson. The Hall has been taken by the Professor for a short season, and to-morrow evening this mysterious personage will dabble iv the Black Arts, either to the horror or amusement of our good citizens. *J A grand f.mcy bazaar was held at Auckland, on the 24th, 25th, and 26th October, in aid of the funds for the extension of St. Patrick's (Roman Catholic) cathedral, at which a sum of over £400 was realised. Nos. 1 and 3 Companies Wellington Volunteer Fire Brigade will meet for practice tomorrow evening, at eight o'clock, at No. 1 Engine House. The Wellington Oarrick Club held its quarterly meeting at Osgood's on Friday evening. The accounts evidenced the rapid progress of the club, and votes of thanks were accorded the manager and secretary. Edward T. Conolly, Esq., barrister, from London, who recently settled amongst us, has commenced the practice of his profession as barrister, solicitor, &c. Tho want of a le^al adviser has been lung felt here, and from Mr, Conolly 's high character and long experience in his profession at home, we feel certain that his settlement in Picton will be of great service in preventing as well as prosecuting law proceedings.— Marlborough Times. Our advertising columns make known that Thompson and Co. have generously come forward on behalf of the widow Sleigh, and will hold a Bazaar on Wednesday evening next for that lady s benefit. A temperance league has been formed in Auckland, which held its inagural meeting on the 2nd instant.
