NEW CALEDONIA.
H.M.B. Falcon arrived at Auckland on the 18th with later news from New Caledonia :— On the 24th September the French frigate Fulton arrived at Port de France from the North East Coast of New Caledonia, she having been sent there by the French Government to ascertain the truth of a report that the natives had killed and eaten a settler there. Upon learning the truth of the report they fired upon the village and killed sixty of the natives, and then returned to Port de France. On the 29th H.M.S.S. Curacoa arrived at Port de France from Erroraango, at which place she had stormed and destroyed the native village, at the request of a missionary settler; and while the men were ashore at the village an able seaman named Holland was mortally wounded, and only survived a short time. The Curacoa was to leave for Sydney on the Bth instant, and from there was to come on to Auckland. The schooner Gazelle, from Sydney, was lying at Port de France when the Falcon * left, but was to sail for Sydney in a few days.
