By the s.s. Wanganui we have further particulars from Wanganui of the fate of Mr. Broughton. A letter to George Grey from his wife, dated the 7th instant, at Futilci, contains the following paragraph — " I have seen all the natives of Putiki, George. Two Europeans have been killed at Patea — they were muf dered by the Hau Haus. lluka Hanaru and his men of the Kakaboki are the perpetrators of the deed." Last Saturday's Chronicle says that on Wednesday one of the Military Train Corps, whose name is not yet known here, was out on horseback near the Patea redoubt. A party of Maoris came upon him and shot his horse, and before he could get himself disentangled they came on him and tomahawked him. His body was afterwards found by Mr. Fisk. Beneath the head was a Maori letter dated .the 9th January, addressed to Te Ua from the Wereroa pa. There was nothing particular in the letter, which seemed to have been dropped by dne of the Maoris. One side is disfigured with gore." And seeing that Mr. Broughton and the Military Train Corps man are the only missing Europeans, it is more than probable that Mr. Broughton is one of the two persons mentioned in Mrs. Grey's letter.
