ENGLISH NEWS TO AUGUST 10.
The brig Gazelle arrived in harbour on Saturday night. Captain Tucker brought Sydney papers, containing English news, from which we extract the following : — LATESL' SPECIAL TELEGRAMS. London, 3rd August. 120,000 bales of wool have arrived. The laying of the Atlantic cable proceeds successfully ; 1,100 miles of the wire have been paid out. Davis'* trial is deferred. The agitation in Prussia on political questions is gaining ground. The sentence of death passed on Mis 8 Kent, for the Road murder, is commuted to penal servitude for life. Mr. Pritchard was executed for the murder of his wife and mother-in-law, whom he poisoned — he made full confession of his guilt. Bishop Colenao returns to Natal, and has published three fresh reviews on the Penetateuch and Book of Joshua. The Rev. Mr. M'Shane was elected President of the Wesleyan Association. Disease (amongst the cattle in London is spreading rapidly. Some cases of cholera have broken out. Money dear. London, Bth August. The Atlantic cable was broken 1200 miles from Valencia. London, 10th August. The Queen has embarked for Germany. Another diplomatic rupture between Austria and Prussia, regardiug the Duchies question has arisen. Cotton is improving. The wool sales will commence on 17th August, with 140,000 bales. Since the last sales a good business has been done, with a slight reduction for combing** wools and finer descriptions, but higher prices anticipated. Consols, 89f to 90 for delivery. j Bank of England discount, minimum 3 per cent. ; prices in stock and share markets have generally declined.
The Queen ia good health, and the marriage of the Prince of Orange with the Princess Helena is definitely arranged. The harvest prospects are cheering. Most extensive fires have taken place in London ; the British Museum and Marlborough House are partially burnt. Dr. Pritchard, convicted of the murder of his wife, has been executed at Glasgow. ; He made a full confession of his guilt. [ Payne, Harold, Atzerodt, and Mrs. Surratt have been convicted and hanged. A Swedish clergyman has been condemned to death for murdering several of his parishioners by mixing poison with the . sacramental wine. t At the general election, Gladstone was t defeated at Oxford, but returned for South
Lancashire. The Liberals have gained a majority of eighty for the new House of Commons. Unusual riots occurred during the elections, especially at Belfast, Monaghan, and Dublin ; many lives lost, houses wrecked, and much property destroyed. The military was called out to quell the disturbances between Orangemen and llibbonmen. Diabolical murders are greatly in excess this month throughout the United Kingdom. The sincere good feeling between France ' and England continues. " Another source of the Nile has been discovered by Mr. Baker, who has given it the name of Myanasa Albert. Forty -six thousand pilgrims died at Mecca in three days from cholera. In Alexandria the mortality averaged four hundred daily. The European population, to the number of 16,000, abandoned the city in dismay. The King of the Belgians is dangerously ill.
