THE WEST COAST DIGGINGS.
The following is from the Lyttelton Times of the 18th :— " On Saturday last nearly one hundred intending diggers arrived by the Phoebe, with a view of starting for the West Coast. They have engaged horses and drays, and intend proceeding on their journey without loss of time. Almost every day brings an addition to that portion of the population who are bent upon trying their good fortune in the new sphere opened up for their energies. Pack horses are in great demand, and good animals, equal to enduring the hardships of the road, are eagerly bought up. As the spring advances, the already large traffic may be expected to be greately increased. We were shown, on Saturday, some nuggets found at the Grey, varying in size from small dust to about the tenth of an inch in length. 1 This sample, which altogether weighed nearly eight ounces, was the -product of nineteen day's labour. The finder stated that his mates had an even better claim than his in, the immediate vicinity, and that he 1 knew that in less time they had made proportionati'ly what he termed ' a much larger haul.' We have heard of another fortunate digger » who has sold his claim for £600.
