THE DEAD KILLED.

We have so often heard that Rewi has been killed that nothing but ocular demonstration will now convince us of the truth of any statement to that effect. There is very little doubt, however, but that tenacious of life, as Rewi, in common with other reptiles, may be, he will nevertheless some day die, and therefore we again put forth a statement respecting his death which has come to our knowledge. On the 31st of August a native, who arrived at Pukekohe from Taupiri, brought the laillo wing intelligence : — "That a skirmish had taken place at Taranaki* and that Rewi was present and was killed." On hearing this our informant was at first inclined to disbelieve the statement, as Rewi was then suposed to be threatening Kihikilii. The report, however, extracted from the Tarannki Herald, that no doubt "Captain Messenger will make a good account of the Ngatimaniapotos" induced him to reconsider the possibility that there might be some truth in the statement made by the native runner. It certainly does aeem reasonable to suppose, if the Ngatittmninpotos are renlly in force at Taranaki, thnt Kewi would be with them, and quite as natural to account for the reported attack on Kihikilii,' as a ruse to divert suspicion from his real intentions. Moreover, a telegram was received from the Waikato yesterday morning, stating that on the previous day, Thu-sday, the s.e. Sturt had arrived in Raglan harbour, and had reported that, when pasting the White Cliffs, between Waitara and Mokau, the continuous report of firearms had been heard, as though a smart action was taking place. The native who brought the report to our settlement, brought it as a purely native account derived from native sources, and knowing, as we do, the celerity with which the intelligence is so communicated, we are glad to cive it more credence than we otherwise might do — the more so as the iame messenger brought the intelligence that three officers hid been either killed or wounded. This evidently referred to Bryee, Butler and Symonds, and as that portion of the intelligence has since been proved to be correct, we may reasonably presume that there is some foundation for the remainder. One thing at last it proves, that in spite of steam and subsidies the natives get information overland quicker than we do by sea. The news of the affair in which these three officers were wounded arrived at Pukekohe, through native sources,on the 31st of August, but not in Auckland through our own means of communication until the sth September. If it be true that Rewi is killed, and killed we most sincerely hope he is, it is clearly unknown to the powers that be. It 1 is quite possible that he is only wounded,

for we are informed that the words used by the Native messenger with respect to his hurt were " mate" and "tv" both. We may state for the benefit of our readers that the Sturfc brought up troops for Raglan.— N.Z. Herald, September 9.
