Thomas Walker was charged with being drunk and disorderly. The Inspector of Police statt&l that the prisoner was a very violent perfoh, and in the habit of abusing his wife when ur.der the influence of drink. Owing to the absence of Mrs. Wa;ker, prisoner waa remanded till Thursday next. VVm. Hindlay, a decent looking man, was charged with being drunk imd exposing his person, and fined 40s. John Jamison, for being drunk, was fined ss. Alexander Douglas was charged with being a stowaway on hoard' the steamer Barwon. Prisoner plea led guilty, and was sent to gaol for one month, with hard labour. William Bannister was brought up on remand, charged witli receiving and embezzling money, the property of^ the Ciiy Board of Cumuiissioners, to the extent of £91 10s. C. J. Pharazyn deposed that he was treasurer of the Board, but resigned office irifLlugust last. The prisoner wa3 clerk to the Board at the time. It was hisAtoty to collect all rates, and either pay them into bank or to him as treasurer. On Monday, the 2 1st of August, prisoner was absent frcjjiji the Town^Board office, and suspecting, therefore, that his accounts were incorrect, made enquiries, and found that on the 19th of the same month piison<_r received from Mr. ■ Sutherland £91 10s, but did not find that that sftn had been paid into his account.
