AN INDECENT ACT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING
Sir — I hare looked, in, the columns of the local papers, since Friday last for notice of a matter which certainly ought to be enquired into and provided against, if possible. It seems that when the bodies of Mr». Howard and Miss Levy were taken from the water and conveyed to the Police Station, they were not taken inside a building but left in the open yard, witli simply a cloak thrown over them. Now, sir, I am sure you will ngroe with me in saying this was a very indecent thing, and if there are no means existing whereby it may be avoided ,in futurp, njeans ought to be provided, fft all such lamentable cases as this, due respect ought to be%fid for t ho dead, at the same time the feelings of sorrowing friends ousjht not to be despised. Ido not think thnt*the constable on duty at the time is to blame in the matter^ for the only place I know of in which he could have put tli m was a cell in the lock-up, and to do that would have been more indecent than leaving them in the open jard. I hope that this matter will be brought before the authorities, and that they will cause the erectiojjjuof a proper deadhouse. The cost of such '(^Building would be little, but th*s convenience great. lam,&c, OltI>ER. Wellington, 19th September.
