POVERTY BAY. ATTACK ON THE FRIENDLY NATIVES BY HAU HAUS. WI MO SnOT DEAD. GATHERING OF THE FRIENDLY NATIVES. ATTACK AND CAPTURE OF THE HAU HAU PA. TEN OF THE FANATICS KILLED* AND SEVERAL WOUNDED.

The Auckland Herald publishes the following extract from a private letter received by a gentleman in Ancklaud, from Poverty Bay, dated 24th ult. : — " News came in yesterday of a fight having taken place at Tokomoru on Thursday last. The Hau Haus fired the first shot. Wi Mo, who was whaling at Mawai, was shot dead. Henry Fotia made a signal from Mawai, to the friendlies at Wareponga, when both parties met at Broughton's pa, at the head of the bay, and stormed it. The Hau Haus took to their heels, carrying six dead bodies with them, and are now stopping somewhere at the back of Aunaura. 4i The Tologa Bay natives sent here today for assistance to take charge of their women and children, while they go up the river to attack the Hau Haus— whose loss amounts to ten killed and several wounded — on our side, one killed and several wounded. All we want is a little assistance, and the Pai Marires will soon disappear out of the district — we want no soldiers ; about one hundred defence men to take charge of the block houses while the friendlies scour the country. Our Bide are in good spirits. It will, in the long run, be a war of extermination, brought about by those foolish people in England, and others in this country. Our natives are much annoyed at Henry having taken, prisoners, they approve of Morgan's mode of warfare, viz., to burn and destroy all before them ; and jiutly say that prisoners taken and sent to be fattened up by Sir G. Grey, will always be their deadly enemies when they return to their homes. They say that all prisoners ought to be

sent to some island, where they cannot return from; and that, if the Government would issue a proclamation letting the Hau Haus know that all of them that are taken will be transported out of New Zealand, and their land confiscated, it would have a good effect. "Fifteen Hau Haus passed this to-day, unJer William King, for Tokomoru; they were fully armed. I met them in the bush. They assnred me that none of the white settlers would be interfered with. Their only enemies, they say, are the missionaries, the Governor, and the friendly natives. " Two natives arrived from the Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, yesterday. They report all quiet there, with the exception of a little excitement about Carroll's son having wounded a Hau Hau while out practising. 11 The sheep farmers from Napier, that took runs here last year and stocked them, are looking rather blue. No doubt they will suffer, should fighting commence here."
