Heneri Te Puni preferred a charge of robbery against .Frederick Wood. They were sleeping in the same room, and next morning prisoner rose first and deuamped, with, as it is alleged, some money he had abstracted from Te Puni's trousers, which lay on the bed The case was remanded till Monday, for further evidence. Captain Pilmer, of the Wellington Volunteer Rifles, Bumniunud Private Staffo.d, for the payment of flues inflicted for absence at drill. In the absence of the sergeant who called the roll m two cases under investigation, they were passed over. For the third, Sirgeant Bhaw was produced, who deposed to having called over the names on the day in question, but defendant did not answer ; he could not say if he had been present, but, failing to answer his name, he concluded he was not there. The sergeant thought he called the roll twice, but could not swear to having done so ; it was the custom to consider those not present who did not answer their names at roll-call. Defendant contended he had not received sufficient notice of the time appointed for drill, and in consequence wa§ not legally required to be present, referred the presiding magistrate to various authorities in support of his views on the subject, and on the conclusion of a most able and lawyer-like defence was informed by bis Worship that he was fined in the sum of one pound. A man, named Staner, summoned a widow lady, one Mrs Partridge, for the sum of £25, the alleged value of a chest of carpenter's tools, detained by her. It appeared thut h Mr. JSymondson, a former tenant of the lady left the premises which he rented from her, leaving £7 unpaid. The tool chest remained on the premises, and was distrained by Mrs. Partridge. Plaintiff claimed the property as his. Judgment given for defendant, with costs.
