LATEST FROM HOKITIKA. ARRIVAL OF THE WALLABY AT NELSON WITH 4000 OUNCES OF GOLD

The s.s. Egmont 308 tons, J. Tlagley commander, arrived at 9.30 this morning from Nelson, which port she left at noon yesterday. By her we are in receipt of our Nelson files. The Colonist of yesterday announces the arrival in Nelson on Wednesday last of the s.s. Wallaby from Ilokitika and Grey Rivers, with 4000 ounces of gold. Our contemporary says : — " Of the gold brought up by the Wallaby this trip, from 1700 to 1800 ounces are from the Grey; and the reports of prospectors northwards are said to represent that gold is being found in numerous different parts along the distance which divides the Grey and theßuller." The following with reference to the lvameri Diggings appears in the same paper : — "The accounts from the Kanieri on mining affairs are on the whole satisfactory. Hinds and party on the flat are doing well, their claim paying them at the rate of between £20 and £30 per week. The many claims that we have hitherto recorded as being on the different leads of gold show no diminution in their returns. The claims in the main street that are on gold are being perserveringly worked, and another party adjoining the Ballarat company have obtained payable prospects. The tunnel that is being driven in from the river towards James' claim is paying well. Hawkes and party, and their neighbours, have every reason to be satisfied with their ground, if not with the decision of Mr. Warden Schaw ; but miners are well aware that in all mining disputes there must be a losing side. On the main terrace, Marshall, Oliver's, and Boswell's claim may be quoted as standing highest in the market, but we have reason to suppose that there are others on the face, situated further along the spur that are paying nearly as well."
