THE GREY. THE ELEANOR FROM THE GREY WITH 1,050 OUNCES.
The intelligence received from the Grey gold -fields since our last, is highly encouraging. On Saturday, the Eleanor brought up 1,050 ounces of gold, this being the first direct shipment from the Grey, all the gold previously obtained having been sent for shipment to Hokitika, of which 1,723 ounces were brought up last week in the Wallaby. We learnt that the Superintendent is taking active measures to secure for Nelson all the advantages which the discovery of so rich a gold-field within its precincts should properly confer upon it. A township (Cobden) has been laid out at the mouth of the river, and, to facilitate business, a wharf is at once to be erected. A considerable number of business- licenses have already been issued to storekeepers and others at Gobden. About twelve miles up the river is another centre of population, and here also a township is laid out ; and further up, and on the diggings three other towns have already arisen. The Nelson Colonist has been informed that on Wednesday morning Batty's canoe came down the river Grey, having on board 200lba weight of gold.
