ITINERARY TO THE GREY DIGGINGS. (FROM THE NELSON EXAMINER.)

As many "Higglers "have i "already started overland from Nelson to the Grey goldfields, who will doubtless be followed by a great body of men as the spring advances, any information we can give regarding the road will be considered useful. The whole distance from Nelson to the Tauwharikarito, the river on which the gold is principally found, is 173 miles, of which about eighty miles may be travelled by drays ; the next twenty-three miles is at present simply a walking-track. The dray-road is followed, but, by taking the track over Kerr's hill from the Motupiko to the Howard, a saving of a few miles is effected in distance. The dividing saddle between the Marnia and the Grey is so low, as to be not worth speaking of. The day's journeys are laid off with reference to convenient halting-places on the iourneys : — \ Miles. HTirst day. — From Nelson to Fox Hill * by van, thence by road to Macfarlane's about 33 Second day. — Over Kerr's range to the River Howard for foot passengers, or by the Big Bush ti the River Howard for drays and horses, about 25 Third day.— Up the River Howard, passing Lake Rotoroa.to M'Gregor's, on the River Tiraumea ... about 20 Fourth day. — From the RirerTiraumea (by Walker's track), crossing the River Tutaki to Hunter's, on the River Matakitatri, thence by Walker's track, over Saddle to the River Maruia (being the end ef the pack road) . . . . about 30 Fifth day. — By Snow's track up the Maruia, over the Saddle to the Grey, and ten miles down that river, the track being cut so far ... about 25 SixtU day.— Down the River Grey to Mackley's about 20 Seventh day. — From Mackley's cross to the River Ahaura, down the same to its junction with the Grey, down the Grey to the Tauwharikarito, on which the diggings are situated . . about 20 The export of gold during the past month reached 23,336 ounces, of the value of .£90,000?! This is the largest shipment

we have yet made, and shows the extent and richness of the gronnd. The Banks have already established agencies on the Grey, and a considerable township has sprung up there ; 1,500 ounces of nuggety gold, the produce of this new field, was purchased by the Bank of New South Wales alone, last week. His Honour the Superintendent, accompanied by the Chief Surveyor and the Provincial Engineer, are now upon the ground, we presume measures will be at once taken to proclaim the Grey district a gold field, and to protect the interests of this province.
