TARANAKI. MAORI AMBUSCADE— CAPTAIN CLOSE KILLED. TWO SOLDIERS AND A FRIENDLY NATIVE WOUNDED.
We extract the following from the Nelson Examiner of Tuesday last : — Another victim has fallen to Maori vengence at Warea, in Taranaki. Captain Close, of the 43rd Light Infantry, in charge of the redoubt left at Warea by Colonel Warre, had gone with a party of men to the edge of the forest for firewood. There a body of the enemy, who must have expected the party, lay in ambush, and fired on them as they approached. Captain Close was killed by the first volley, and two soldiers aud one friendly native were wounded. The troops on being fired upon charged their assailants, but the latter made good their retreat. Whether they sustained any loss is not known.
