LOSS OF THE ROYAL MAIL STEAMER ATHENS AND 17 OTHER VESSELS.
The Cape Town Mail, of 1 9th May, says — One of the moat destructive gales that have ever visited Table Bay occurred on Wednesday, the 17th instant, two days after the departure of the steamer Roman, for England. Early in the forenoon an anchor boat was capsized, and twelve men drowned During the day many vessels were driven ashore, most of them became total wrecks. The most shocking catastrophe was the loss of the mail steamer Athens. About six 1 o'clock in the evening her last anchor parted, and she attempted to steam out to sea. At first she appeared to make considerable headway, but before seven o'clock she drifted broadside on to the rocks near Green Point, and very speedily broke up. Captain Smith, Dr. Curtis, and all hands perished. There were thirty persons on board of her. Of 28 sea-going vessels in the bay' at 10 a.m. on Wednesday — at 8 p.m. on the same, day but ten remained.
