FEARFUL SCENE AT AN ELECTION MEETING.

Mr. Potter addressed a meeting at Rochdale on Tuesday night. Two or three thousand persons were present. Mr. Potter advocated a wide extension of the franchise, and said he would support a bill for manhood suffrage. Towards the close of the proceedings a gaspipe broke, and the lights were turned out in an instant. Intense consternation aud excitement were caused by this. Women and men were screaming, windows smashed to, get out, and there was a great rushing to the doors. The chairman implored the audience to remain quiet. Some only accepted the advice. Many of the persons present were severely bruised. While the confusion lasted an awful state of suspense and excitement prevailed. After a time all were got out safely. Great excitement prevailed in Rochdale in consequence of the news of the accident having got abroad. — Liverpool Paper.
