Extraordinary Marriage.— A Paris letter says ;— " The Civil Tribunal of the Seine has •delivered judgment in the case of a priest who, having married some years ago, has teen lately struck with compunction, and sued for a release from the holy, or, according to his conscientious scruples, unholy, bonds of matrimony. The marriage has been dissolved on the grounds that the priest had not de <clared the fact of his having been in orders previous to the performance of the ceremony. The result to be deduced from this decision naturally is that a priest has only to throw off his gown to enable him to contract matri inony, and on finding that state to be a failure, to free himself from its ties by resuming his frock and cowl, A convenient discovery for the members of that reverend body. Meanwhile, what about the wives and children thus easily discarded ? A gigantic enterprise is talked of in the States — namely, a marine railway round Niagara Falls, to transport vessels much more rapidly from one lake to ,the other than could bs done by a canal. The cost of the railroad will be so much less than that of a canal that the plan is said to be feasible. Stolen Treasure— The Sisters of Charity, Detroit, lately buried 700 dols. in specie in the cellar, for fear of raid from Canada, getting the assistance of a man to the job. When they went for the money, a few days after, it wasn't there. The man had stolen it. A newspaper has been started in Oaylon, called the Ceylon Watchman, which is to be printed in the Tamiljanguage. This is to be a secular paper, but the editor is a Protestant convert of the highest Christian character, and his influence will always be on the right side. The missionaries have great hopes in the establishment of the new Watchman, particularly as the literary and business character of the editor is such as to command the highest confidence and approbation of the inhabitants of the island. The Indians have renewed their attempt to interrupt the overland route to California # A conflict between 1,500 of their number and a detachment of Nebraska cavalry occurred at Julisburg, Nebraska, on the 7th inst., in which the Indians were defeated, with the loss of thirty-five killed and many wounded. Petroleum in Mexico. — The " oil fever" has extended to this empire. Castillo, one of the best mineralogists of the country, has discovered petroleum in Gaudaloupe, distant only one league from the city of Mexico, in Otapan, and in San Christobal, near the brook of Amnesquite, in the munic"pility of Maintitlan.

Precocious. — I heard a very good story the other day of a very high functionary of these realms. Said he (in the anecdote, you know) to his scapegrace son, " Look at me. Here am I, at the top of the tree and what is my reward ? Why when I die, my son is the greatest rascal in England." To this made answer Young Hopeful, " Yes dad, when you die i but not till then you see." The story derives a great deal of its point from the manner aud personal presence of the sire ; but one musn't be too precise. — Illustrated Times. Turpentine punch is a popular remedy in the wards of the Meath Hospital. It is of especial service in the flow stages of fever, anil the following are the ingredients which enter into its composition : —An ounce of turpentine, two ounces of brandy, eight ounces of boiling water, and sugar sufficient to sweeten. Half of this should be taken for a dose, to be repeated, if necessary, every third hour.— Medical Circular.
