Life at the White House.— Of late the state dinners at the White House have huun unusually frequent j and at present prices it is estimated that no one of these could have cost the ' President less than SOOOdols. A few such entertainments, it will readily be seen, would completely wipe out his salary (25,000) j and so it is thought that private contributions eke out the presidential income. I 0 inconsiderable expense has been incurred in t 'c frequent refurnishing of tl c White House parlours. It may be asked why it should be necessary to supply new fu niture, Ac, for the Presidential mansion more than once during a Presidential term, in a severely republican country like this. The answer ia easily enough given. The persons who are in the habity of visiting Mr. Lincoln at his " court " seem to be wholly of the relic hunting class. Window curtains, eord=>, tassels, and tiie like, are ruthlessly cut to pieces by the vandals who throng the Presidential parlours. Two Treasury clerks, as well as unofficial individuals, have already been detected in the act of cutting off portions of the upholstery ; and so crying lias the evil become that it has been found necessary to station special policemen at every window of the White House reception rooms. — New York Correspondent of Standard.
