THE WAR IN AMERICA. IMPORTANT NEWS. FALL OF RICHMOND. TERRIFIC FIGHTING. HOPELESS CONDITION OF THE CONFEDERATES.
The barque Rosalie brought the news to Sydnej'; her latest San Francisco papers of date 4th April. FROM RICHMOND. SPECIAL DESPATCH NO. 1. Chicago, April 2. —President Lincoln telegraphs from City Point at eight o'clock this (Sunday) morning, as follows : —List night General Grant telegraphed me that Sh'irldan with his cavalry and firth corps had captured three brigades of infantry and a train of waggons; also several butteries. The prisoners number several thousands. This morning G-rant, having ordered an attack along the whole line telegraphs as follows: — "Both Wright and Parke have] got through the enemy's lines. The battle rages furiously. " Sheridan, with his cavalry and the Fifth Corps, and Mill's division of the Second Corps, which was sent to him this morning, is now sweeping down from the west. All now looks highly favorable." A second despatch, dated eleven o'clock, from the President's, shows a smash up of the rebel lines in front of Petersburg, by Generals Wright, Parke, and Ord, who have joined in the fight. Sheridan's cavalry of the Fifth Corps and part of the second division are coming in from the west on the enemy's flank. A despatch from General Grant's Adjutant General says: — " Fighting has been going on for three days, during which the forces on both sides exhibited unsurpassed valour. This is all we have received thua—far, but~ifc--is sufficient to show that all goes well. — Signed, Rankijj." Gold. New York, March 28th—Gold, 154; 29th, 152. The following (says the-Alta California of 4th Apiil) are copies of the despatches which came to hand yesterday afternoon previous to the receipt of the confirmation of the fall of Richmond. We write with an eagle's quill, presented to the Alta office by Mr. J. T. Jones of this city; a quill reserved for the express duty of chronicling the capture of the capital of Rebellion. Its fellow has been kept to announce the declaration of peace and the restoration of the Union. The following were received by the President of the Telegraph Company, The first, from Salt Lake, reads — " A Chicago paper states that Petersburg has been captured by General Grant." A second despatch was received from thTToperator at Ohama, dated late in the afternoon, to the effect that— " Petersburg was evacuated, and Richmond taken. One hundred guns and many prisoners captured."
