By the arrival of the s.s. Otago we are in possession of our Auckland files. The N. Z. Herald of the 2Gth issued an Extra, containing the following ;— Friday, May 26. ] Two o'clock p.m. H.M.S.S. Eclipse has just returned from J the Eaat Coast, and brings the following in- j telligcnce :— The Eclipoe arrived at Opotikion the night of the 21st. Captain Freemantle landed with all the boatg manned and armed, with the intention of surprising the Pai Marires, but before the men reached the redoubt they were parceived by the Pai Marires aid compelled to return, fearing the boats might be cut off from them. In their retreat the Maoris fo llowed and attacked them, wounding one of the corporals in the arm. The fire was returner 1 by the men of the Eclipse, and one of the principal chiefs Hakaro lliki fell dead. A half-caste, named Fihipihi was also missing, and supposed to have been killed. On the 23rd the Eclipse arrived at Wanga" parawa roads where Capt. Freemantle and Lieut. Boughay landed, and had an interview with Patferl (Butler), XYom thence went to Te Kaka where Win, King cume on board and informed Capt. Ficmantle where Eprahiom could be iound. fchortly afterwards Tewai and two men disguised as Maoris went on shore, and found Epraljiam at Aw&atii. Firing was soon heard, and Capt. Fremantle went with assistance, when he found that Eprahiam had been caught by Tewai, but owing to a crowd of women having gnthered around, he had succeeded in making bis escape.
