The Evening Post. THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 1865. THE WRECK OF THE CITY OF DUNEDIN.

There appears to be now no hops left of the lafety of the City of Dunedin. The Examiner of the 27th informs us that she had not arrived at Nelson at that time, and that it was unlikely she would have gone direct to Hokitika. The figure-head found at PalJiser Bay is stated to be a correct representation of the City of Dunedin } and the conclusion arrived at, taking into consideration the time she is overdue at the port for which she sailed, the identification of the cask of pitch, and the binnacle picked up, the cabin cushion and other articles, is, that she struck on a rock and went down instantly. The Sandfly left at four o'clock this morning for the purpose of searching along the coast, and we fear that any discovery she may make will only tend further to confirm the fact tbafc some fifty or sixty fellowcreatures have passed into eternity at a moment's notice. The Examiner says —By the arrival of the Egmont from Wellington aud Picton, last niKht, we learn, that the City of Dunedin left Wellington on Saturday night last, for Picton, Nelson, and Hokitika, the Captain saying he intended having his Sunday dinner in Nelson. As Bhe has not arrived here, fears are entertained that she has met with some mishap, for it does not seem likely that she would have proceeded direct to Hokitika.
