THE WAIKA.TO SETTLEMENTS

Notwithstanding the contradiction of a contemporary— a thing we are quite used to when we are the first to offer infolimation on any particular subject to the public— we must again repeat what we stated on Wednesday, that a fresh offer has been made to the Superintendent by the General Govern ment, respecting the immigrants introduced by the latter, and that one condition of tlie arrangement is, that the settlers, instead ot being located on Crown lands, shall be sottied in different parts of the province, on Provincial lands, and these lie for the main part in the North. Had 'the Council been pleased to form a quorum the whele correspondence on the subject would hare been submitted to them ; as it is the superintendent will take the reflponsibiliiy upon his own shoulders, and the action of the Council in giving him no opportunity of consulting that body absolves him from any charge of wilfulness in so doing. His Honour is determined to do what he can in kcepiug the immigrants in the province, believing, as he does, that thpy may be readily absorbed into the existing population without to any appreciable extent de. pressing the labour market. Auckland, we believe, has already felt all that will fall to her share of commercial depression in the present crisis) of New Zealand. She is thoroughly solvent individually and politically, and the arrival of a few thousand immigrants will be attended with rather permanent benefit than otherwise to the province, — N. Z. Herald.
