The P.N.Z. and A.Jbt.M. Co.'s steamship Auckland, Capt. M. ffltzsimons, arrived in harbor yesterday afternoon, from Melbourne, via, Okitiki. The Auckland left Melbourne Heads at 9 p.m. on the 10th instant. The Nelson Colonist says :—: — The news from the diggings Taries but little to that brought by previous steamers. As usual there are fortunate diggers, who have found the precious metal iv large quantities, and is believed that the yield will continue for some time j but there are many Btill at Okitiki, who are waiting to ascertain the truth of any new discoveries before moving further on, Eive days prior to the departure of the Auckland, a fresh rush had taken place, three miles from Okitiki, and it was reported that the diggers were securing half an ounce per hour. George Cundy and party (well known In Nelson) are the fortunate possessors of the

largest nugget yet found, weighing 22 ounces : and in the same district, 25 miles up the Grey, the diggers generally have been very successful. There is an abundance of provisions at Okitiki ; but great scarcity prevails inland, the rough state of the roads rendering transit a very difficult operation The most important news brought by the Auckland is the destruction of the notorious bushranger. Morgan. The particulars are as follows : — Morgan crossed the Victotian border on Saturday morning, Bth April, and stuck-up several carriers, &c, boasting that he would go through that Colony in a week. On Sunday morning (April 9), he visited Mr. Rutherford's station, Wangaratta, and ordered refreshment, at the same time compelling Miss M'Pherson to play on the piano for his amusement. In the evening he left, making Messrs. Rutherford and M'Phersou precede him. During the time he was at Mr. Rutherford's, a man of the name of Quinlan borrowed a rifle and laid wait for him, and shot him through the back, the ball penetrating his lungs. He was immediately conveyed to Wangaratta, and expired shortly afterwards. The English Mail had not been telegraphed at the departure of the Auckland.
