THE BARQUE GAZEHOUND ASHORE AT OAMARU.

Information was received in Dunedin on Tuesday to the effect that the barque Gnzeh >und had parted her moorings in Oamaru roadstead and gone on shore opposite the township, in a situation where, it is greatly feared, she will become a' total wreck. The Gazehqund , is a fins clipper harque of 380 tons, and at the time of the disister w; s loading wool for London, having previously discharged at Oamaru 'a cargo of grnernl merchandise, imported direct from England. The following are the particulars, as they have been communicated tO;Us : — " There has been a very heavy surf on since, the 6th instant, with little wind from the S. E. to N. E., the ship laying to her own anchors nnd riding heavily broadside to the sea.: Last evening at about 6 p.m. separated one anchor,, and this morning at, 7.30 am. parted the other, close to the haws'epipe with 100 fathom's of chain out. Every exertion was made to get the ship off by tnnkin,' sail there being a Might air oflfl shore,, but not sufficient to compete with ' the heavy sea heating on the beach. She drifted with all ¦ til set, on shore, where she lays comparatively easy, it being now low water. It is iiipos<lble td tell What the result will be when the tide flows. If the sea doe* n<>fc go down the vessel will go to pieces. Every exertion possible is being made by Captp'n' Sewell, Bti.ich Muster, to save the ship. But it is greatly to be feared his exertions will not be successful." Since the above wa* received we have learnt that at one O'clock yesterday the vessel began to break up. She h»d 638 bales of wool on board, to save whifth every endeavor was being made. It is understood that both ship and cargo arc insured. The latest intelligence received last evening states that the. vessel had rolled out hoi masts, and although some of the wool had been saved, a considerable quan'ity was washed out to sea. The owners are Messrs Kedfern, Alexander and Co., London ; and she was chartered to load on account of Messrs Traill, Roxburgh and (Jo. —Otago Times. ¦
