LATEST FROM WANGANUI.
Sir George Grey is still iti Wangantri. No news of Importance. The following is from Saturday's Chronicle : — "On Monday last, before .the militiamen in charge of Woodull's redoubt had left the .place, a small party of natives appeared and •et fire to the survey hut, about a mile distant. They then drew nearer and lighted a fire on the opposite side of a gully overlooked by the redoubt. A few of the militiamen went out and poured in a volley, which did not at first disturb them. Ensign Sergeant took four men, and going along the ridge of a hill to within about 400 yards, threw a few rifle balls among them which frightened them out of their equanimity, and they took to cover. It was not observed whether any were hit. Lieutenant Peake then went some distance down theKai Iwi Creek with twenty men, and seeing a few Maoris on the other side, fired at them, and they quickly made off, leaving behind them a horse which his owner was afraid to stay for.
