THE NATIVE WAR. LATEST INTELLIGENCE. (FROM THE WANGANUI CHRONICLE, MAR. 8.)

The expectation of the submission of the natives, which was strong a few days ago, seems to have died away, Pehi and his people have not come down the river according to promise, aud there is no further pacific news from the coast. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by the hon. Mr. Mantell and his private Secretary, arrived off the mouth of the river 011 Sunday morning ia II.M. s.s. Esk from Wellington. His Excellency came up to the town in the Gundagai, and landed about noon. He has since had several interviews with the loyal natives at Putiki, who are anxious to go to Waitotara • but we have not learned that anything has yet been definitely settled with them. His Excellency seems to .be awaiting the arrival of Pehi and the other chiefs who surrendered at Ohoutahi, but they seem glow to fulfil their promise, having boon expected on Monday and not having yet arrived. We regret 'to say that Major Rookes had an attack of an alariring nature this morning, which at one time threatened to be fatal. He was in his office between ten and eleven o'clock, and complained of illness. He gradually became worse, and three medical men were sent for. After they arrived he became insensible, and was carried home on a stretcher. We believe he has recovered somewhat during the day. He had taken a little ether this morning under medical advice, but both the cause and particular nature of the attack do not seem to be definitely known.
