THE MATAU RA HUSH.
We have been f ui .ilshed with news from the scene of the Mataura up to the 26th ult. For two or three days previous to that date, the rush of miners had been so great that the jpopulation of the locality was increased to About » thousand souls. Several fresh gullies have been opened, with the name prospects as fhose obtained from original discoveries. Seventy ounces of gold were sold last Saturday week, but the miners do not seem inclined to sell more than sufficient to keep them in provisions. A sample of coarse gold was also ¦old on the same day, but the locality from which it was obtained could not be learned, the miners being apparently determined to keep the discovery secret. No crimes of a ftriou* nature had been committed on the f rwha«— Otago Times.
On the 27th instant, Sergeant Baker brought down 63J ozs. of gold from the Mataura diggings. He reports the discovery of several new gullies, one on Divigias and Blythe's run, and several close to Dr. Menzies home station, all of which are said to yield payable gold. — Southland Times.
