THE EVENING POST. FEBRUARY 8, 1865.
TPmh the success attending the issue of T>aily Evening Papers in the other Pro<finces. of New Zealand and fcl the ftister Colonies, the proprietors of the EVENING 3?ost are led to hope that the inhabitants Cf Wellington will hail w.'th pleasure the appearance of a journal dovoted to their Interests, in which they vill endeavour, faithfully and concisely, to narrate the various and several political and social on dita of the day, simultaneously with, their , Cccurrence. A liberal courso of policy Will be pursued; and Hid founds of fnoderation will )iot be overstepped in giving expreaslon to the views entertained ||y them as journalists.

Our files from Auckland, per ft. 5. £or<3 Ashley, contain little news of any .interest. The Lord Ashley, which arrived this afternoon, brought down some of the Government officials and their families front Auckland. His Honour Judge Johnston and the. £rovin» cial Solicited (Mr* Xzwd) also learned in her* ' In accordance with the order*, the Wel« lington Rifle Volunteers paraded yesterday afternoon; at half-past four, in front of the Oddfellows' Hall; and afterwards adjourned to Barrett's Hotel fop the purpose of electing a aott'Comroiesioned officer, when Mr» W. kackner, a clerk in the Jf.&.S.N. Company, who had previously "been a sergeant in the Napier Volunteers, was duly nominated. The following gentlemen- were admitted to the corps :«-Messrs. & M. Owen, 0. Ormsbee,T. Pitcher?, S. BhaW| ft Itatft C# Hi<?J*lW£i And Joseph Jacob* Wa understand Cofotiel Jfauftafn wflt £ro« bably succeed Major General Galloway in command of the militia in this colony. Tho Major General intends shortly to return to England for ft few months on urgent private affairs. Colonel H&ultain "boars a very high name in the service, and is veil known for his courtesy and iiataa to fill uaefcr. Ills command. On Sunday afternoon lha remains of ihe late. Dr. Mark Kebbell were consigned to their last resting 1 place) in the Wellington Cemetery. The largo number pf, mourning friends in attendance, and the assemblage of 4 ]arg«< concourse o£ people along* the route and in the church-yard, showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes of the community. The funeral eem'ce. wan performed by the Bight Rev. the liord $ishop ©f Wellington, assisted Toy the Her* Mx* A^drews.**-N.Z. Advertiser* We understand that the volunteers o! this city have) undertaken to perform all the guards and duties of the garrison for a month. If such be indeed the case, 'soldjermng is not so unpopular among the Wellingtopians »s we are led to believe* The Government Buildings are now very nearly filled, the) whole of the ministers and their staff of official*, with the exception of Major Atkinson and the Colonial Defence Office, having arrived and. commenced their duties. Householders, taking advantage o£ the great dearth of residences of any description, are asking the most exorbitant rents for hovels, lean-tos, and shanties of every con* ceivable build and sort. We understand the blio4 erected by Mr. Mears, adjoining .his saddlery establishment, on Lambton Quay, has, after much competition, been let by him to a fruiterer afc a weekly rental of thirty shillings. The Government officials, lately arrived from Auckland, complain bitterly of the inconvenience to which they are put, by being obliged cither to pay fancy prices fdr tumble down cottages, or to exist in boarding houses at the extreme end of the. town. Surely some spirited individuals, incredulous o£ the prognostications of those prophets wbo fo.rtel an ewtb<iuake, will bfttis tbem-
selveft and erect somft snug little fcabifcatfons suited to th© pocket* of people who ftrft not Rothschilds.. As no gold field lias yftfc teen discovered lore, it ia rathe* too bad we should suffer from their prices; sufficient unto tha day is ih<t evil thereof. j The detachment of the 14th H«gTmenk*rfco left us on Saturday last full of spirits and high lopes of having a rap at Jack Maori, we learn, from our Wanganui contemporary, are io garrison that town* the old "Die Hards " having been marched io the front. This imi&fc bo a sad disappointment to our eld friends* As WellfngtonlaM themselves apparently have not the ghost of a notion irt what direction their hero-named streets lie, we are at a. loss to conceive how strangers are bx* pected to find their way about; doubtless the Town Board will take steps to put them on the right road. Wo only hope it won't be a case of the "blind leading the blind." There .ought to be a grand street re-christen-ing 1 ceremony. At present, owing to the great influx of new friends, ©very one seems in a chronio state of ptar or comet gating, very unbecoming an empire city* i The new buildings on the beach are 1 progressing favorably, Mr. 0. P. Barraud's shop being now open. If all the now vacant space be filled with equally handsome frontage the appearance of the town beachwwrds will be immeasurably improved* We understand ft proclamation trill very shortly be issued rescinding the order with reference to the postage of newspapers* It is a matter of doubt whether the Govern* ment were wise In imposing a tax of such a novel character without the consent of the Assembly, and we believe ihe matter trill come, under discussion" nejsfc session. End Wesleyan Chapel was again largely attended last night, when the Key. Mr. Taylor delivered a. thrilling; discourse ott the words in the XIII. Chap, of St. Luke's Gospel, 3rd and ,sth verses, " Except ye repent ye. $hall all likewise perish." We regret to hear that the reverend gentleman's stay among us Is shorter than anticipated, owing to a new arrangement in ihe departure of the steamer j he announced his sorrow- at having' to leave us for the South on Sunday next, two days earlier than he expected,, thereby ! disarranging his programme, and depriving the community of an unspeakable benefit. No Information of the feodto of the late Superintendent And Joseph Cook has been received, by the last advices from Nelson. It is supposed that the *' undertow" has carried them into deep water; should such, indeed., bo the case, there 4s tut little hope they will ever be found, Vx'etii Ihe Marlborottgh Press -fretsaw lhat the Escort arrived front Deep Creek on Thursday last, bringing down five hundred ounces .of gold. The diggers havo recommenced working, and anticipate a very muc.h" larger return should the clerk pf the weaker favor them* fytfc Marlborough ffesg of the Cth ftfaUhC, announces tin attempted escape of a prisoner of the name of Taylor, who had been permitted to work with the hard labour men previous to conviction anjj sentence* He was fired at by the Warder in charge, of the working party, and numerous opinions have been expressed as to the legality of the act. It is a nice point of law, whether a constable is justified in shooting at, -with intent to maim or kill, a prisoner who has merely been committed to take his trial for an offence of which ih^ law holds him guiltless untU he has b.ee& duly and legally convicted* The Bruce Herald of iha 39th says;— "Considerable excitement has prevailed at Tuapeka for some time past, owing to a rumor that a few cargoes of Celestials were likely to arrive soon In Dunedin. The miners as a body are strongly opposed to the introduction of the Chinese?. We do not .think that there is any truth in the rumor of their coming." A case oE extraordinary development of bushranging tendencies ia reported, in the Sydney' papers :¦— " A boy named St. Clair, not seventeen years of age, Btole a horse and saddle from the stable of Mr. Charles Hughes of Bathurst. He was pursued and taken into custody on the following day. On being searched, it was found that he was fully equipped for a bushranging tour, having a revolver* a mask, black crape, and somoq pieces of string to tio up those ho might rob. He. was brought up at the police office, and committed for trial. In defence he said it WAS tU * i<&9» It h»0 beea AUfgeatci that,

They are the property of hi<f Excellency the Governors and Sir Cfeorga Grey, purposed Mm self delivering them t<* the Commissioners when he arrived to open, the Exhibition, Being prevented doing so* his Excellency lost no time in recovering them from their place amongst hia luggag« which, had been sent on board the Esk; and} they will to very many persons prove a very interesting addition to the capital collection which the province of Auckland has eontr*» buted". Tho hexagonal stand mentioned a day or two ago has aow been partly filled with, Sheffield good"?, each of the' upper six divi* sions being appropriated to the products of at different manufacturer. In the yard adjoin* ing the corridor, there has been laid down a) ehorfc length of permanent way, illustrative* of the " improvements and economy in th« construction of* permanent wjaya for *aifc ways," effected by patents of Mr. Rutter> C.E., of Hobart Town. This is 4ft B£ia guage* (the narrow guage o! Great Britain) ; an 4 there is' also a short length of sft 6in guag# line, ehowmg the actual construction of- so much as is laid of the Lytteltoa and Christ* church Railway. The instrumental ban<J waa much praised by visitors yesterday? an* it fa> pretty sure to grow into a decided aft traction* The jury impanelled to faqufra .touching! the death of Mrs. Jarvey, assembled by; adjournment at the Hough Inn, Cavershan% road. Captain: Jarvey was present in ou«-» tody; and Mr; James Smith attended" fo| watch the case on his behalf. The* Coronetf paid he was sorry that the inquest could .notf be terminated that day; for there had bee* no information from Dr.' Macadam, ihe ana-i lyafc, who was away on ft visit to South Aus«e tralia at the time the last steamer left MeU bourne, but was almost hourly expected id return. On that account, ifc would be ad< visable that the inquest. ehou!<H>e furthee adjourned for a fortnight} so that, when thai jury again met, there should be no doubft as to the arrival of Dr. Macadam's reporfa Should it prove, however, that the report had' not then been received, he would take car« " to inform, the jurors of the. fact, so as to save them from needlessly assembling. Th« inquest was adjourned to Tuesday, the 14t*| February."— Otago Daily Times,
