The annual meetings of subscribers to the Doyleston and Southbridge Public Libraries are to be held tomorrow evening. On Tuesday, May 19, a dance will be held in Lakeside Hall in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund. The series of euchre evenings in St. James's parish hall, Southbridge, is to be continued next Wednesday evening. "The Device of the Bird-catcher" is the title of the Rev. G. P .Hunt's discourse for Sunday evening at Dunsandel Methodist Church. The public schools in the Canterbury Education Board's district close this afternoon for the term holidays, which will last for a fortnight. A bridge evening will be held in St. John's Parish Hall, Leeston, next Monday. For the best competitions aggregate for five out of seven nights a very fine painting of Mt. Alexander, Otira, has been donated. The opening social of the Wesley Guild was held in Wesley Hall last Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr L. Eade acted as M.C. and presented an excellent programme of games, competitions, etc. The Guild meetings will be held every week until the end of August. They are open to the public. To-morrow evening at Leeston and on Monday evening at Southbridge, the Ronald Riley Company, by arrangement with J. C. Williamson, Ltd., will present the play, "Happy-Go-Lucky O'Flynn," the story of a man who would sooner be happy than rich, and who wanted everyone else to be the same. His adventures in pursuit of a wife are the cause of many diverting situations. Musical numbers are a feature of the play, which is by the author of "The Patsy." Upwards of seventy people attended the opening social of the series in the Catholic Hall, Leeston, on Tuesday evening. A very enjoyable time was spent, and dancing was enjoyed to the strains of the Hall orchestra of four instruments . Mr Leo. McCartin kept the dancers moving merrily, and the ladies of the committee provided a dainty supper. Competitions were won by Miss D. Stapleton 1, Miss C. Moriarty 2, Mr E. F. Owens 1, Mr J. McCormick 2. The socials will be continued fortnightly, and it is hoped to stage the hard-up function for Tuesday, June 2nd. The names of the principal performers at the concert to be held at Southbridge next Thursday in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund are announced in to-day's avertisement. The organiser, Mrs E. Calsori, in addition to those already mentioned, has been fortunate in securing the services of Madam Leighton, the gifted mezzo-soprano, Miss Elaine Moody's Hawaiian Quartette; and Misses Dorothy Feaver, V. Clare, Joan Hughes, C. O'Callaghan, E. Greaney and Messrs Ronald Webb and Elmsley Williams. Contributions of cakes towards the supper at the dance will be gratefully accepted at the Hall during the afternoon. Those who have not hitherto enjoyed the pleasure derived from participation in ballroom dancing, as well as those who would like to become more proficient at the art of Terpsichore, will be interested to know that Miss Rona Vaughan, a particularly highly qualified teacher, is conducting a class for adults In the Band Hall, Leeston, every Tuesday evening from 7.30 to 9 o'clock. New pupils may enrol at any time, and may interview Miss Vaughan before the class meets. There is also an afternoon class for children at 3.45. Shyness should not prevent any young woman or young man from acquiring a knowledge of dancing, which is one of the healthiest and most enjoyable of evening pastimes. In one district the public were so much impressed with the values of United Stores blankets that the United Stores' representative sold over 80 pairs to his customers in one week. At 8 o'clock to-night the institution of the Rev. C. L. Wilson, late of j Akaroa and Lincoln, as vicar of Southbridge parochial district, will take place at a service in St. James's Church, to be followed by a welcome social in the Parish HalL The death occurred at the Christchurch Hospital yesterday of Mr George Sloan, of Lakeside, after a lengthy illness, at the early age of 38 years. Several years ago the late Mr Sloan, who was a returned soldier, took over, in partnership with Mr W. H. T. Collins, the property owned by Mr W. T. Fulton. Later on the partnership was dissolved and the property divided. A young man of quiet disposition, possessing sterling personal qualities, the late Mr Sloan won the ragard of neighbours and others with whom he came into contact. He was a popular member of the Sedgemere-Lakeside Miniature Rifle Club, and took a very live interest in the sport. The late Mr Sloan is survived by his widow and a large family of young children, who have the sincere sympathy of a large number of friends. The funeral takes place in Christchurch to-morrow morning, the cortege being timed to leave the residence of the late Mr Sloan's aunt, 224, Montreal street, at 9.15 a.m., for the Catholic Cathedral, where Requiem Mass will be celebrated, proceeding afterwards to the Bromley Cemetery.
