DRAMATIC MOMENT
ARCHBISHOP STOPS HYMN.
A mission lately conducted by the Archbishop of York at Oxford captured the imagination of the undergraduates to such an extent that St. Mary's Church was unable to accommodate those who desired to attend one particular service. Hundreds heard Dr. Temple's address through the microphone. There was a dramatic development when Dr. Temple interrupted the singing of the hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." The congregation had reached the verse: Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. When the Archbishop stopped the organist and insisted that those who did not mean the words of the hymn would not sing it, and those who meant it a little should sing it quietly. It was noticed that the volume of singing showed an appreciable drop when the organist again took up the tune.
