ELECTRICITY COSTS
WELLINGTON AND CHRISTCHURCH.
SOUTHERN ADVANTAGE
"Regarding this £50,000 profit from the electrical department," said a questioner at the Civic League's meeting at Island Bay, Wellington, last week, "do you know that in Wellington we are paying double as much for heating and power as is charged in Christehurch, and that the lighting charges for business houses in Wellington are twice as high as they are there?" Mr T. C. Hislop, a candidate for the Mayoralty, said he knew charges were considerably higher than in Christ-, church, but he was not aware that the difference was so great. "I hold that the profits of any trading department should go to reduce the cost to the consumer," said Mr Hislop. "Of the £50,000 profit made last year £10,000 had been diverted to the surface sealing of roads, and the other £40,000 had been used for departmental purposes—the erection of sub-stations, etc." He always held that in theory and practice a service instituted by a municipality should aim at giving greater benefit to the people than could a private concern.
