LINGUISTS IN THE NAVY.

In the British Navy there are 300 commissioned officers fully qualified as interpreters in 18 languages. Apart from these 300, there are scores of officers whose knowlege of a foreign language is considerable, although insufficient to qualify them for the high standard demanded of a qualified naval interpreter, who must be perfectly proficient in foreign naval terms. French, as one would expect, is the language which claims the greatest number of interpreters, but all European languages, not excluding Russian, are well represented in the list. Japanese can claim 14 Naval officers who have mastered that difficult language, but Lieut.-Commander St. J. G. H. Pitt is alone in the Navy in being able to debate abstruse problems with a Chinese Mandarin. The list of interpreters includes commissioned officers of all ranks and all branches. \
