LOCAL AND GENERAL
Anzac Day (Saturday next) will be observed as a Sunday at the Leeston Post Office. The Ellesmere County Council is calling tenders for cleaning the district drains. To aid the funds of the Football and Tennis Clubs, a dance will be held in the Dunsandel Town Hall on Friday, May 1. Mr E.J. Slattery's Band has been engaged, and there will be a card match in the supper room. On Thursday, May 21, the Dunsandel Ladies' Hockey Club will hold a mask and fancy dress ball. Bryson's Band has been engaged and Miss L. McGregor is the hon. secretary. On account of Saturday being Anzac Day, the Southbridge Library will be open on Friday evening from 7 to 8. The Leeston Library will also be open on Friday night. An advertiser is offering for sale at a very cheap rate gorse sticks, some of which are 4 to 6 inches thick. They were cut out on the plains. Gorse wood is equal to, if not better than, any other firewood. At Leeston next Friday (sale day) the Ellesmere branch of the Plunket Society will undertake the sale of poppies on behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The entire proceeds will be used to assist sick and needy ex-servicemen. To aid the funds of the Southbridge Bowling and Croquet Club a plain, fancy and mask ball will be held in the Town Hall next Thursday evening. A children's ball will be held from 7.30 till 9 p.m. and the adults will have the floor from 9 until early morning. Twelve good prizes for the best costumes are to be awarded, some for the children and others for the adults. The judges are Mr and Mrs A. J. Inwood and Mr and Mrs J. H. McMillan. A good band has been engaged, and a splendid night's enjoyment is promised. In most households in the district the ball is being looked forward to by children and adults with great interest, and it is stated that there will be a wonderful array of fancy costumes. The admission charges are very moderate for a function of such importance. In connexion with the harvest festival of the Leeston Methodist circuit a Bring and Buy Evening will be held at Wesley Hall, to-morrow evening. Gifts of saleable articles will be acceptable. The proceeds are to augment the harvest offerings. There were large congregations at all the harvest thanksgiving services held in the circuit on Sunday, and the various churches were beautifully decorated. The morning service at Leeston was conducted by the Rev. T. J. Wallis, of Christehurch, and the evening service by the Rev. G. P. Hunt. In the evening the choir was reinforced by a party from Southbridge, Mr G. B. Couch presiding at the organ. A quartette was sung by Mr and Mrs J. A. Mackie and the choir gave an anthem. Special harvest thank-of-ferings were received at all services, to be applied to the liquidation of the circuit deficit.
About fifty applications were received for the position of female assistant in the Springs County Council's ofliee. A final selection has not yet been made. It is understood that the Council received about 90 tenders for the drain cleaning contracts recently advertised in the Guardian. A week ago a collision occurred in front of the Springston Hotel between a motor van from the Ellesmere county and a baby car, which came out of the hotel grounds. The small vehicle was severely knocked about and the front axle of the van was bent, but neither driver was injured. "Museum Exhibits." Christehurch City Council candidates," runs the heading to the pictorial page in this morning's Christehurch Press. The heading may be quite, applicable to some of the candidates, but the Press appears to have been rather hard on at least two of the candidates known in this district as "Archie" and "Tiny." Each should have several more years of useful service before qualifying as " Museum exhibits." Suits to measure.—Fine wool worsted from £5. This includes a try-on by thoroughly competent men. Fit and style are guaranteed. Hundreds of patterns to choose from at Chapman's, (l) Though Chapman's prices for single articles are equal to anything in the trade, in most cases still better prices are quoted for quantities. All goods are clearly marked, and special prices are given for one, three and six. (2)
