GOLF NOTES

DAMAGED CUP COMEDY

MISTAKE OF ENGRAVER

* THE'COMMITTEE'S BESOUKCE.

Only the other weqk we were told a remarkable story of how a native durzi, who, upon being instructed to make another pair of trousers exactly similar to the pattern that had become torn, did so with such fidelity as to reproduce the tear in the new garment! This week, however, we can go one better, for this week's mail from Africa brought with it a pretty little story somewhat similar, but this time dealing with golf. Two years ago the committed of the Tanga 'Gymkhana Club in East Africa sent certain miniatures of trophies to a local native engraver. Among them was one that had been badly dented by a fall and required straightening. On the tabulated list of instructions supplied to the engraver was one, "Straighten bent cup," but on the return of the trophies this particular one was found to be in its original twisted condition. Neatly engraved round the rim, however, were the three words, '' Straighten Bent Cup!" But the committee got over thd little | difficulty all right, fdr they instituted an annual match between sides chosen by the president and the captain, the former's side playing under the title &JL"The Straightens" and the latter's going by the name of "The Bents." Play is by foursomes, and the winning side indulges in a draw to decide which member shall hold the "Straighten . liont Cup.''
